Rachel employed a series of stylised line drawings designed to encase the space for the text within all her books. For 'Annabella', the text page designs incorporated a somewhat evil-looking 'stork-like' chicken that enacts, throughout the book, a parallel story of its own, involving a constant battle with an irritating puppy and a kitten. There is something mildly reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley in these images.
