Whether or not it is because it took several years to complete the illustrations for 'Annabella' (which was probably started before 'The Land of Nod', but completed later), the general style of the illustrations changes significantly through the book. The earlier colouring is intensely vivid and uses a dryer brush with relatively thick paint. The later paintings tend to be much lighter and softer and, apart from some central character detail as in the Scottish seaside illustration shown here, Rachel has utilised a generally wetter translucent technique.
